As Australia`s oldest and largest dementia organisation, Alzheimer`s Australia WA is at the forefront of dementia care services, with world-class research, risk reduction and education and training programs designed to meet the challenge of what has been described by Access Economics as "a national dementia epidemic". It is estimated that dementia currently affects more than 230,000 people in Australia with the figure expected to reach over 1.13 million by 2050. In Western Australia, there are already about 23,000 people with dementia. This figure will increase five-fold to 125,292 by 2050. Alzheimer`s Australia WA was formed by a group of carers more than 20 years ago, as the nation`s first support group for people with dementia and their carers. We strive to provide support, counselling, information, education and respite services to people throughout Western Australia who struggle with the daily challenges of dementia. As a not-for-profit, charitable organisation, we have grown from strength to strength while we champion the cause and interests of our clients at a personal, community and political level. In light of the growing dementia epidemic, we are also focussed on creating widespread awareness and acceptance of dementia throughout rural and metropolitan Western Australia. This includes bringing our message to the community across various cultures and languages.
