Best Buddies Australia is a unique and exciting not-for-profit organisation that seeks to harness the power of friendship to transform the lives of people with an intellectual disability. We want to create a community where all people are connected, included, respected and valued; through friendship. The Best Buddies program matches a person with intellectual disability to a person without a disability in a one to one friendship that is supported by Best Buddies staff. These friendships have profound and positive effects on the Buddies and are also deeply rewarding for the Best Buddies volunteers. Best Buddies International, the organisation behind these inspiring relationships was founded in 1989 in the USA by Anthony Kennedy Shriver. Since then, Best Buddies has spread to 46 countries including Great Britain and Germany, to Tanzania, Finland, Chile and Australia.
