Beacon Foundation

Mission Statement:
The Beacon Foundation is a National not-for-profit organisation that seeks to influence the attitudes and culture of Australians so that each young person develops an independent will to achieve personal success for themselves and their community. A key strategy of Beacon is to initiate original and innovative projects that demonstrate solutions to youth unemployment and encourage self-help at the local level. The implementation of these innovative projects relies on the support of local communities and the business community at a local and national level.

Description:
There are many avenues to target disadvantage which often leads to unemployment, and we are continually developing new strategies to encourage self-help at the local level. The Beacon No Dole Program The Beacon No Dole program aims to address the issue of youth unemployment and familial welfare dependence, as well as improve the school to work transition. The program started in a Tasmanian High School in 1995 out of a concern young people were leaving school without any real purpose or idea about their future career path. The program is now being run in almost 100 schools in all Australian states and territories. Through the program students, parents and teachers gain greater understanding and confidence about all the options post compulsory schooling, whether it be further education, training or employment. Key program components: The conscious and public commitment of students to pursue further education, training or employment coupled with active support and involvement from local businesses and a focus on individual career planning have proved key ingredients in assisting young people make a positive transition from their school years.
